Sposobnost kritičkog razmišljanja jedna je od temeljnih generičkih kompetencija. Bez obzira na struku kojom se čovjek odluči baviti, ona je neophodna za aktivno i zdravo sudjelovanje u svijetu. Dok u egzaktnim znanostima barem na elementarnoj razini stvari jesu ili nisu, eksperiment je uspio ili nije, u humanistici stvari nikada nisu crne ili bijele. Upravo je u tome najveća prednost humanistike. Ona jedina posjeduje napretek mogućnosti za podučavanje oblikovanja kritičkog mišljenja, odnosno, za raspoznavanje i vrednovanje nijansi.
Kurs “Teaching Critical Thinking through Art” dostupan je u cijelosti i besplatno online (SmithsonianX), ali i jednim dijelom na YouTube kanalu National Gallery of Art. Daju se savjeti za podučavanje kritičkog razmišljanja kroz umjetnost, i to svih uzrasta, od onih najmanjih u razrednoj nastavi do visokoškolskog obrazovanja. Kurs je nastao na temelju popularnog programa Art around the corner koji je National Gallery of Art organizirala za nastavnike iz Washingtona. Strategije koje se koriste u kursu primijenjene su iz Artful thinking pedagogije koju je razvio Project Zero na Harvard Graduate School of Education.
U kursu se istražuju tri dispozicije razmišljanja, koristeći osam rutina koje se mogu lako implementirati. Počevši od dispozicije promatranja i opisivanja, možete naučiti kako voditi svoje učenike u korištenju njihovih osjetila i komuniciranju utisaka o onome što vide u umjetničkom djelu. Rutine koje se koriste u drugoj dispoziciji, traže od učenika da postavljaju hipoteze o umjetnosti i podržavaju svoje argumente promatranjima i dokazima. Ispitna i istraživačka dispozicija izaziva učenike da usavrše svoju prirodnu znatiželju formulirajući otvorena pitanja. Cijeli kurs namijenjen je razvijanju sklonosti kod učenika ka dubljem promišljanju.
